My father's favorite -- in fact only -- Witbank story was about a childhood picnic. After a day of guzzling braaivleis, playing bokbok, kennetjie and kleilatjies, and watching the old guys drinking and playing klabberjas under a tree, they packed everything on the cart and tried to set out for home, but the mule wouldn't budge. Frank had the brilliant idea of lighting a fire under the beast to get it to move, and that's what they did. Unfortunately, however, it only took two steps forward and stopped, so the cart was over the fire and caught alight.
